Many people attribute the gas smell in the oil to short-distance driving. This is an opinion I don’t share, but it isn’t out of the question either. I had to come up with my own explanation because none of the statements were supported by any evidence.
During short drives, the crankcase pressure doesn’t build up to the point where the PCV valve can flush it out. Sludge and gas smells are created when a small amount of fuel condenses back into a liquid state and mixes with the oil. If this happens, changing the oil more frequently will be enough to fix it.
