Emergency is one of those things which everyone wants to avoid. But, some situations are so dangerous that we cannot do anything to avoid them. It doesn’t mean that we have to sit and wait for something bad to happen. No! We should try to take necessary actions which will help us to overcome these problems.

No matter how small or big it is, every situation can be improved if we know how to use the right tools and techniques. Knowledge is the first tool which will help you to deal with any problem.

Blizzards

Blizzards

Blizzard emergencies are those unexpected events which occur when a blizzard or a significant snowfall dumps a lot of snow on a particular area. When this happens, the local authorities will declare an emergency. This means that all the residents of that particular area will be required to shovel their walks and clear their driveways.

If you live in an apartment building, then you will probably be asked to shovel your walk and clear the snow from your driveway. If you own a business or a commercial property, then you will probably be required to shovel your walk and clear the snow from your driveway and/or parking lot. Sometimes the authorities require that you shovel both the walk and the driveway.

Chemical spills

Chemical spills

A spill is any unwanted liquid that has gotten onto your property. A chemical spill is when a toxic chemical has been released into the environment without your knowledge or consent. Spills can happen anywhere and at any time. They can be caused by a number of different things such as a broken container, a manufacturing error, a defective product, or even a simple mistake made by a do-it-yourselfer.

Whatever the cause, if you discover a chemical spill on your property, you need to get rid of it immediately. The first step is to call the proper authorities so they can determine the extent of the spill and give you information on how to proceed. You should also contact your local emergency management agency. If the chemicals are toxic or hazardous in any way, they will tell you what to do. If not, they will direct you to the proper agencies to notify.

Spills of this nature can be very dangerous to your health and well-being. It is vital that you take the necessary precautions to ensure that this kind of situation does not occur again.

Dam failure

A dam failure emergency is a situation that requires immediate attention.  Dams are man-made barriers that hold back water. When dams fail, the water rushes downstream with extreme force. The water level in the lake or river behind the dam rises rapidly, and this causes the dam to give way.

Dam failures can cause widespread flooding, loss of property and even loss of life. Dam failures are very serious, and they can happen at any time. They are not unusual, and they are not unpredictable. Dam failures are simply something you have to be aware of and ready for.

A dam failure emergency is any situation that can cause a dam to give way. There are many things that can cause a dam to give way. The most common one is heavy rain or snow melt. But there are many other factors that can contribute to a dam failure emergency. These include earthquakes, volcanic activity, landslides, erosion, sabotage, and many others. The point is, no matter what the cause, when a dam gives way, it does so very quickly.

Droughts

Droughts

Droughts are one of those things that seem to happen “out of nowhere” and then just as quickly disappear. The way you know it’s really over is when the local TV station shows footage of an actual drought victim. Then you can be sure the end is near!

But droughts are not something you can plan for or prevent. They are a fact of life for much of the country and there’s not much you can do about it. However, there are some things you can do to minimize their impact on your farm or ranch. One of those things is to use the best irrigation system you can afford.

Irrigation systems are discussed in more detail in a different section of this newsletter (Irrigation). Another thing you can do is to plant drought-tolerant crops. These are crops that have been developed by plant breeders so they will still grow during a drought. Even so, if you live in an area that routinely experiences drought, you should still plant these crops because they will still provide food and fiber for you and your family.

Earthquake

An earthquake is a very sudden and violent event. In fact, some experts say that an earthquake is 20 times more powerful than a bomb. That means that if you are in an area that is prone to earthquakes, you should make sure that you have a home that is built to withstand such an occurrence.

The first step is to make sure that all the parts of your home that can move during an earthquake are firmly attached to the foundation. This means that the floors, walls, ceilings, and even the roof need to be secured. You should also have all the furniture in your home securely fastened down.

You should make sure that any electrical wiring that goes into your home is properly protected. All electrical outlets should be equipped with a plastic cover to prevent any kind of wires from being pulled out.

Heat Exhaustion

Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion is caused by your body losing its ability to regulate its temperature. As your body tries to cool itself down, it causes a chain reaction throughout the rest of your body. This makes you feel exhausted because your body is working hard to keep itself cool.

Your heart rate increases, your blood pressure goes up, your breathing gets shallow, and you may start vomiting. In fact, if you’re not careful, you can actually die from this condition.

Fortunately, there are some simple things you can do to help prevent heat exhaustion. Drink plenty of water. Stay out of the sun. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. Wear a hat. Wear gloves. Avoid alcohol, which slows down your metabolism. And get plenty of rest.

Fire

A fire emergency is when your home or place of business is threatened with fire. This could be a result of you having a fire yourself, a nearby home or business catching fire, a forest or brush fire, or some other type of fire.

Whatever the case, when there is a fire emergency, it is the responsibility of the local authorities to respond and put it out. It is not the responsibility of you or anyone else to fight the fire. You should do whatever is necessary to protect your property from damage or destruction.

You should also be ready to deal with the consequences if the fire department doesn’t show up in a timely manner. That means you need to have the essentials to deal with the aftermath of a fire emergency. Those essentials include:

Floods

It is estimated that during a 100-year flood, the water will rise approximately 18 inches above ground level. It is also estimated that during a 1,000-year flood, the water will rise approximately 6 feet above ground level.

When the water starts to rise, get to high ground. If you are at home or work, move to the highest floor possible. If you are driving, get off the roads and into the parking lot of a large building. If you are camping, get to high ground as soon as you can. You can use an existing hill or make one for yourself.

Hurricanes

Hurricanes

Hurricanes are very difficult to prepare for. The first signs of a hurricane are subtle. You may notice a change in the weather, like cooler temperatures or an increase in humidity. But once a hurricane is well underway, there is no subtle about it.

A hurricane is a huge storm system that consists of a central dense overcast layer (the “doughnut hole”) with an outer ring of thunderstorms. The thunderstorms are what produce the strongest winds and the most devastating rain. When the conditions are just right, the thunderstorms can generate winds of up to 156 miles per hour!

If you are caught in the wrong part of a hurricane’s path, it can literally be the end of your world. You need to know what to do when a hurricane is coming your way. You need to know how to prepare your home and family for the onslaught of hurricane force winds, heavy rain, and potentially disastrous floods. You need to know how to be ready for the worst and hope for the best!

Pandemics

A pandemic is a disease that affects a very large percentage of the population at the same time. A pandemic is often caused by a virus or bacteria and it can cause a lot of suffering and death. Pandemics are different from normal epidemics because they spread much more rapidly and affect far more people. Some pandemics are caused by viruses and some are caused by bacteria.

One of the best-known pandemics was the bubonic plague which was caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. This microbe was responsible for the deaths of millions of people in the 14th century. It was only discovered in the 20th century that this microbe is still with us. It lives in rodents and when one of those rodents is bitten by a human, the plague can infect the human.

Another notorious microbe that affects humans is the HIV virus. It is estimated that about 40 million people worldwide are infected with the HIV virus. Unfortunately, there is no cure for HIV and it continues to spread.

Rabies in the area

Rabies is a viral disease of the central nervous system that affects both humans and animals. The rabies virus is carried in the saliva of an infected animal and is transmitted when an animal bites or scratches a person.

In most cases, a human who is exposed to the virus will not develop any symptoms or become sick. However, some people who are exposed to the virus will develop a mild case of the flu-like symptoms which is called “exposure-only”.

These people have no idea that they have been exposed to the virus and will never develop the disease. However, they may pass the virus on to their pets and other animals if they are bitten or scratched by them.

Terrorist attacks

Terrorist attacks

In case you haven’t been paying attention, there has been a lot of news about terrorist attacks over the last few years. It seems like every day we hear about another attack on some innocent civilians somewhere in the world. As you can see from this illustration, terrorists will stop at nothing to achieve their goals.

They are ruthless, barbaric people who will kill and maim in order to advance their cause. Sometimes, these attacks are carried out by “lone wolf” individuals who have been brainwashed into thinking they are doing the right thing. Other times, these attacks are carried out by groups of people who have been trained and funded by some despotic government.

Tornadoes

A tornado emergency is when conditions are such that you should take action to ensure your safety. If you are in a mobile home or a manufactured home, you should go to a sturdy interior location like the center of the house or the garage. If you are in a building built before 1978, you should go to an interior location if at all possible.

If you are in a single-family home or a multi-family home, you should go to the interior of a high-rise apartment building or a high-rise condominium. If you are in a public building like a library, shopping mall or school, you should go to the interior of the building. If you are in a very large group like at a church service or a political rally, you should go to the interior of the building; otherwise, you should go to the interior of your vehicle.

Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms

A thunderstorm is one of nature’s most powerful forces. It is not the wind or the rain that causes the most damage. It is the lightning that comes with the rain or the wind. The lightning is what does the real damage. When it hits something, it causes an explosion of heat that ignites whatever it strikes. This can cause fires that can burn buildings down and even kill people.

During a thunderstorm, you need to take cover immediately. Find a place that is as low to the ground as possible. If there isn’t a building nearby, then find the closest substantial object like a parked car or a large truck. Get under the protection of that object and stay there until the storm passes.
