This magnetic field is extremely strong near the surface of the wire, but it diminishes rapidly as you move away from the surface of the wire. In the case of the electro-hydraulic power steering, a steel rod is attached to the end of the valve shaft.

The other end of the rod is attached to the input shaft of the rack and pinion steering gear. This rod is called the “power” or “push” rod. It is this rod that is acted upon by the magnetic field produced by the electric current.

The flow of fluid to the steering motor is controlled by a valve located in the hydraulic circuit between the pump and the steering gear. In response to operator input, the valve opens (allows fluid to flow) or closes (prevents fluid from flowing) to adjust the amount of pressure in the circuit and thus control the amount of fluid supplied to the steering motor.
