What Can Happen If You Have A Bad Wheel Bearing

Keep in mind that a bad wheel bearing can make the brake rotor of your car move, which can make it harder to brake. Things that cause problems with a car’s brake system can be very dangerous.

#3. Removal of Vehicle’s Wheels

In the same way that was said before, a wheel bearing lets the wheel/tire assembly move. It is the part of the bearing assembly called the hub that serves as a place to put the wheel and the tire on.

It can, however, be very dangerous for a wheel bearing to break. This can cause the wheel and tire to fall off completely.

If you have a bad wheel bearing, you might hear a noise that sounds like a snow tire on the front of your car. There may be some play in one of the wheels if you raise the front end, but this isn’t always. There are other times when a CV joint doesn’t work well and makes a clicking sound when you turn quickly.

Step 2

Once your car is going about 10 MPH, keep it there. Listen for a clunking sound as your car speeds up above 20 MPH.

From 20 to 30 MPH, you should speed up and listen for noises. Then, from 30 to 40 MPH, you should speed up even faster. Sometimes, you may also hear a small thump when you brake quickly.

Step 3

It’s time to put the car in reverse and quickly hit the gas.

It’s very likely that you have a bad inner CV joint.

But if you pay attention, you might hear a grumbling vibration that could be a sign of damage or severe wear to the inside CV joint.

Step 4

Try to rule out the possibility that the outside CV joint is broken by doing acceleration tests while you drive around in a fairly small circle.

As soon as the CV joint gets louder or quieter, or even changes pitch while you are still turning your car in either direction, you have a bad outside joint.

But if the wheel angle doesn’t make the CV joint sound any different, then it’s the inner joint that’s making the noise.
